US Department of Agriculture – Network Management Support Services (NMSS):  Provide to the USDA technical oversight of the network infrastructure, critical, customer-centric coordination functions internally and with external carriers, and provide superior customer support.


The System Engineer will be supporting enterprise servers and network monitoring applications in support of the USDA Network Management Support Services Team. Supported systems are critical to the successful delivery of services and reporting and must be available 24X7.


Supporting this environment requires extensive technical product experience in Windows and Linux servers as well as systems security controls including but not limited to, Windows Server, Microsoft SQL, Linux, SolarWinds. The Systems Engineer will assist network testing, troubleshooting, and support as well. The System Engineer will coordinate the delivery of highly responsive customer service, support, and demonstrate ability to manage to a high level of customer satisfaction.


This position will focus on projects to accomplish system upgrades and additional buildout during the first three to six months.  Systems must be upgraded in place and without any interruption to services provided.  As these projects are completed, the position will be approximately 25% O&M of the systems and 75% Tier1/Tier2 enterprise network support.


  • Implement, manage and maintain Windows servers
  • Implement, manage and maintain Linux servers
  • Experience in VM, including hyper V
  • Coordinate & schedule third party installation and maintenance of server hardware
  • Monitor and maintain Microsoft SQL.
  • Administer and configure Solarwinds in redundant, failover environment.
  • Communicate and coordinate maintenance schedules and downtime to users.
  • Prepare and maintain documentation
  • Manage the integration of vendor tasks, and track and review vendor deliverables.
  • Strong analytical and communications skill
  • On-Call duty rotation required.
  • Enterprise (WAN) network support


Minimum Experience:

  • 3 years’ experience in a Systems Engineer / Server Admin role
  • Experienced in the troubleshooting of complex servers and applications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in analysis, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting of the following:
    • Windows Server 2012
    • Redhat Server
    • Hyper V or VMware
    • Microsoft SQL
    • Network monitoring
  • Knowledge of logical network design including DMZs, WAN design and integration, and client connectivity solutions
  • Strong understanding of IPv4 (IPv6 desirable)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with Fortigate and Juniper Firewalls
  • Cisco routers including routing protocols
  • Security - Access Control List, Intrusion Detection Systems & Firewalls
  • Understand DNS with multiple starts of authority


  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Have or obtain ITIL Foundation certification within six months of start
  • Microsoft certification desired (MCSA or MCSE)

Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance
