AceInfo is currently seeking a Scientific Programmer II to support our federal project, in Silver Spring, MD

 

 Position Overview: 

 

The National Weather Service’s Meteorological Development Laboratory (MDL) is responsible for developing and implementing scientific techniques into NWS operations, furnishing a full spectrum of forecast guidance, providing interactive tools for decision assistance and forecast preparation, and conducting comprehensive evaluations of NWS products. 

 

The Quantitative Precipitation Forecast Verification System (QPFVS) is an automated, centralized system that verifies quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF). This system includes a web-based graphical user interface that allows for side-by-side comparisons and near-real time assessment of weather guidance (e.g., model forecast grids), forecasts (e.g., National Digital Forecast Database and Weather Prediction Center forecasts), and surface objective analyses (e.g., Un-Restricted Mesoscale Analysis). Development has recently started on a gridded verification database to provide gridded QPF verification results in near real time and the web-based GUI to display results as tabular data, plots, charts, and maps. Verification results available through QPFVS may be used in special studies for weather guidance development, presentations at scientific conferences, and in briefings to senior management.

                                                                                                           

 Position Description:

 

We are seeking a Meteorologist to perform a variety of scientific programming and data processing tasks to enhance verification techniques and displays for the Quantitative Precipitation Forecast Verification System (QPFVS). Candidate must have solid meteorology background; good math skills, especially statistics. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), web development, and good software programming skills are preferred. This position supports the Meteorological Development Laboratory (MDL) of the Office of Science and Technology Integration (OSTI) of the National Weather Service (NWS). MDL is located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

                                         

Responsibilities

  • Work with MDL scientists to enhance verification displays for QPFVS, including interactive verification displays driven from a PostgreSQL database and a Web Map Service (WMS)
  • Support efforts to develop, test, and implement procedures within a PostgreSQL database to store and access meteorological and statistical data for visualization
  • Carry out research and development tasks in support of MDL’s verification projects
  • Design, develop, implement, and maintain software and webpages necessary for archiving, processing, and displaying meteorological data
  • Assist MDL scientists with displaying and mapping forecast guidance and verification results, writing documentation, and preparing presentations

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, physical science, or computer programming
  • 2-4 years’ experience in related area
  • Knowledge of the principles of meteorology and weather forecasting
  • Knowledge of programming and scripting
  • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environment
  • Experience with web applications and libraries (e.g., HTML, JavaScript, and PHP)
  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques, including linear regression
  • Familiarity with statistical guidance for weather forecasting
  • Experience with code documentation

Preferred

  • Existing favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI)/Tier 1 adjudication
  • Familiarity with geospatial databases (e.g., PostGIS/PostgreSQL) and software
  • Experience writing and executing scientific computer software on a Linux/UNIX operating platform
  • Knowledge of data visualization in browser (e.g., D3, plot.ly)
  • Familiarity with of numerical weather prediction models, model output post-processing, and their applications
  • Familiarity with Model Evaluation Tools (MET) verification package
  • Familiarity with WMS (e.g., MapServer, GeoServer)
  • Familiarity with Python
