    AceInfo is currently seeking a Scientific Programmer II / Meteorologist to support our federal project, in Silver Spring, MD


     Position Overview: 



    Weather forecast guidance from the National Blend of Models (NBM) project currently provides a set of next-generation foundational guidance products based on National Weather Service (NWS) and non-NWS model information and continues to grow.  The techniques developed are intended to create an enduring process for the generation of guidance products valid for days 1-14.  The National Blend of Models project will provide a starting point for the NWS Collaborative Forecast Process.  Training on new products will be funded within the NBM project and centrally generated products will be deployed to Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Service Centers through AWIPS II.


    This project continues to develop a set of next-generation foundational gridded guidance products based on NWS and non-NWS deterministic and ensemble model information for use in the forecast process by the local forecast offices and NCEP national centers suitable to support the population of the National Digital Forecast Database (NDFD) grids.  Initial focus has been on filling service gaps in deterministic forecasts, but future development will focus on expanding all forecast parameters to calibrated probabilistic fields.  Local NWS forecast offices have demonstrated early success objectively blending model output from NWS models with the Canadian and other non-NWS weather prediction models.  This success has been demonstrated by improved accuracy and expanded availability of probabilistic information.


     Position Description:


    We are seeking a Meteorologist to perform a variety of scientific programming and data processing assignments supporting the National Blend of Models (NBM) project intended to improve weather forecast guidance products. Candidate must have solid meteorology background; good math skills, especially statistics.  Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), solid software and scripting programming skills is a must. This position supports the Meteorological Development Laboratory (MDL) of the Office of Science and Technology Infusion (OSTI) of the National Weather Service (NWS).  MDL is located in Silver Spring, Maryland and candidate is expected to work within the core work hours of 6 AM to 6 PM Monday thru Friday.                                     


    • Work with MDL scientists to investigate and develop statistical post-processing and blending techniques for the National Blend of Models project
    • Develop software and leverage existing algorithms developed by the NWS Regions to centrally derive variables needed to support the NDFD, and ensure meteorologically consistent guidance from calibrated and blended model output
    • Write and/or modify programs using Shell Scripting, FORTRAN, and Python which are used for data processing on High Performance Supercomputing Systems   
    • Assist MDL scientists with writing documentation, displaying and mapping forecast guidance, and preparing presentations
    • Assist MDL scientists with implementation of blended products on the NOAA operational supercomputer



    • Bachelor’s degree in meteorology, physical science, or computer programming
    • 2-4 years’ experience in related area
    • Knowledge of the principles of meteorology and weather forecasting
    • Knowledge of programming and scripting
    • Familiarity with UNIX/Linux environment
    • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical techniques, including linear regression
    • Familiarity with statistical guidance for weather forecasting
    • Experience with code documentation


    • Familiarity with Geospatial software (preferably ESRI desktop applications)
    • Familiarity with Numerical Weather Prediction model output
    • Familiarity with Fortran
    • Familiarity with Python
    • Familiarity with the encoding and decoding of GRIB2 products
